High torque mechanism and hands information

Description

High torque clocks are powered by either an AA battery or a C battery. There is no difference in the power of the mechanism however the C battery will run for longer.

High torque mechanisms are designed specifically for use with larger clocks and longer hands.

A high torque mechanism is recommended for hands with the minute hand over 152mm (6") length, and essential over 178mm (7"). Our high torque hands are in a seperate category to assist you in selecting the correct mechanism for your choice of hands.

For hands over 203mm (8") the minute hand has a counterbalance to ensure smooth running.

When measuring the minute hand it is important to note that it is measured from the centre of the mounting hole, not the overall length.

The length of the hour hand is generally approximately 2/3 of the minute hand.

If you need to shorten the length of the minute hand, that is easily done with a pair of tin snips. The section of the minute hand that has been removed should be glued (recommendation is to use CA Glue) to the underside of the remaining minute hand to ensure that the balance of the hand is not lost.

If you wish to change the colour of the hands it is possible to paint them (black is easier to paint than gold. Carbatec currently only stock black high torque hands).

High torque movements (mechanisms) have an increased spacing between the hour and minute hands to prevent the longer hands from binding. The additional space also ensures that the counterbalance under the end of the minute hand will clear the hour hand.

Whilst the high torque mechanisms will run a second hand, these are not recommended and for that reason, we do not stock long second hands.

If you wish to surface mount your large clock we stock a "movement cup" for both the AA and C battery size mechanisms.

We also have available 100mm vinyl adhesive Roman and Arabic numbers. These can be used to make a large wall clock.
